Sriwhana Spong, Learning Duets, choreographed and danced by Benjamin Ord, 2012, HD video

The choreography for Learning Duets was conceived as an ongoing linear progression made in reference to the length of the beach site rather than the black box of the theatre or the white cube of the gallery. Movement gestures invoke the languid and everyday expression of privileged leisure as seen through early modernist depictions of newly fashionable beach recreation. The improvised segments of material refer to the immediacy of performing in the surrounding environment, where a trained or colonised body may stutter on the re-enactment of its own history, while attempting to be in partnership with the present.
